Skullcap (Scutellaria galericulata)
Flowers: July to September. Height: 60cm (24in).
Sometimes spelled Scullcap, the name is derived from the Latin word scutella, which means little dish, as the small flowers of these plants have a dish, or helmet-like shape reminiscent of the skullcaps or helmets worn in medieval times.
Medicinal: Acting as a mild sedative, it was used to relieve anxiety and nervous tension, eased muscle spasm and helped insomnia by inducing sleep.
