Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)
Flowers: June to September. Height: Up to 150cm (60in).
Known as Throw-wort, Lion’s Ear, and Lion’s Tail, it is a member of the mint family.
Medicinal: Used to treat heart palpitations, depression, melancholy, cramps and convulsions and later used by midwives to stimulate contractions during childbirth. Culpeper’s Complete Herbal (1653) wrote ”There is no better herb to drive melancholy vapours from the heart, to strengthen it and make the mind cheerful, blithe and merry”.
