Applemint (Mentha suaveolens)
Flowers: Evergreen, flowers in summer. Height: 60cm (24in).
It was popularly known as ‘Monk’s Herb’ because it was mainly found in Infirmary gardens. Mints were historically used as strewing herbs, spread over floors to be walked on, thus releasing their scent and also acting as a natural insect repellent.
Medicinal: This particular variety of mint has been used medicinally for hundreds of years throughout the world to restore appetite, assist digestion and bowel complaints. Also used as an anti-inflammatory and as an antidote for venomous bites.
Culinary: Used to flavour drinks, foods and to make Applemint jelly.
